Things to do in Buda Castle
The imposing Buda Castle sits on the Castle Hill in Budapest offering views over the beautiful Danube river. It once served as a residence of the Hungarian kings but today the castle complex houses the Hungarian National Gallery, The Budapest History Museum and the Széchenyi National Library.
The foundations of today’s castle were constructed in the fourteenth century. The castle would later be besieged over 30 times and went through considerable changes in style, renovations and reconstructions throughout the years.
The main structure of the Buda Castle, also known as the Royal Palace, is a massive Neo-Baroque-style building. The interior consists of some reconstructed medieval rooms and is home to two museums and the library. The Budapest History Museum, located in the southern wing of Buda Castle, presents the history of Budapest from its beginnings through to the modern era. The Hungarian National Gallery presents Hungarian art works from the eleventh century until the present day. The Széchenyi National Library is a collection of rare and antique books.
The Castle District and the castle itself belong to the World Heritage sights of Budapest. The castle and the surrounding area are brimming with culture and history. Visitors can enjoy the surrounding area by walking or join a guided tour to take a closer look at the castle. You can access the castle in a number of ways, either by foot, bus or by the well-known cable car, which departs from Széchenyi bridge.
