Sitting at opposite ends of the Gulf of Kastela, Split and Trogir offer two contrasting visions of the past. Your day begins in Split, a bustling city built inside the walls of Roman emperor Diocletian's Palace. Film crews once stood exactly where you're standing now, as Split's old town was used as a filming location for “Game of Thrones”.
You'll have time to wander at your own pace: stop for lunch, browse small shops, or settle in and watch the world go by. You'll visit two markets and grab a typical snack at Mlinice Pantana, before heading to Trogir.
Once in Trogir, you'll notice a calmer, more compact atmosphere on this small island just offshore. Its old town feels almost frozen in time, with narrow streets, elegant squares and medieval architecture. At its centre stands the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, home to the remarkable Radovan Portal. Together, Split and Trogir show two sides of Dalmatia – energetic and unhurried –, and it's that contrast that makes the day stay with you.
