Why you’ll love this…
  • It's a jam-packed day visiting Madeira's iconic coastal villages and natural landmarks
  • In Ponta do Sol village, you'll get to know the country's roots in banana farming at the local museum
  • There are wow-worthy views of the North Atlantic from Cabo Girao, the highest sea cliff in the world
  • In the traditional fishing village of Porto Moniz, you can take a dip in pools formed by lava rock
  • From Paul da Serra plateau to Camara de Lobos village, your local guide knows the lay of this land
What to expect

As you criss-cross Madeira, you'll see how quickly the landscape of such a small island changes dramatically. On the north coast, you'll see the volcanic fishing village of Porto Moniz, while to the south, Camara de Lobos hides under the towering sea cliff of Cabo Girao, which dominates the scenery. Local guide, Monica, says, “it's a tour with a small group, which is the best way to discover ancient paths, hidden villages and unexplored viewpoints on the island.”

It may surprise you that Madeira's sub-tropical climate and volcanic soil make it ideal for growing bananas. At your first stop in the village of Ponta do Sol, you'll visit the local banana museum, taste their goodies and learn more about the area's history of farming. Then, it's over to the north side of the island. Prepare to feel like you're on top of the world as you're driven over the largest plateau on the island, Paul da Serra, with an average altitude of 1,500 meters – that's like four Empire State Buildings stacked on top of each other.

Recover from the views and head to Porto Moniz, a village that tumbles down the green hills to the coast. Monica adds, “the natural pools put Porto Moniz on the map, so taking a dip in these iconic swim spots is a must.” Dry off and continue along the coast to Sao Vicente for lunch, before finishing on a high – literally. Cabo Girao is the highest sea cliff in the world, standing at 580 metres, offering unbeatable views of the North Atlantic Ocean.

Full-day eastern Madeira 4x4 tour with lunch

Set off on a 4x4 tour that gives back to the local economy and helps keep Madeira green. Your action-packed day takes in gems like the village of Machico, UNESCO-listed laurel forests and Funchal Ecological Park. What's more, you'll do it all with the help of a local expert. Rúben, one of our guides, says, "wild and untamed nature is Madeira's most precious treasure. Make memories with an experience that the world will thank you for."During the months of October to April, your first stop is at Funchal Ecological Park, where a sustainable activity will take place, contributing to the conservation of the endemic flora of the Island. Next, you'll visit the village of Machico for a look around. When the island was discovered in 1419 by Portuguese explorers, this is where they first landed.Heading off-road towards the north, you'll zigzag through an ancient laurel forest – a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 – on scenic trails towards the mountain town of Santana to see its steep-roofed, straw-thatched homes. After a well-deserved lunch break in a typical local restaurant, you'll round off with a pit stop at a nearby viewpoint, offering knockout coastal panoramas all the way to Madeira's easternmost point, the São Lourenço peninsula. Plus, there's a photo stop at a waterfall, Cascada de Agauge, on the itinerary, too. If you're visiting from May to September, we switch up the order of your tour, so you start your trip to Machico to learn about how Madeira was discovered by Portuguese explorers. Follow up with a swim at the golden beach of Machico and a 30-minute walk along the farm and forest trail of Levada do Castelejo, before a visit to Sao Jorge where you'll see a 300-year-old watermill that's still turning with the flow of the water. Then, it's lunch in Santana and an off-road ramble through Laurissilva Forest, a photo stop by a waterfall and ending in Pico do Arieiro in the afternoon.

Northwest Madeira 4x4 Tour with Laurisilva forest and tastings

Taking in coastal gems, wild forests and sustainable producers, this 4x4 tour showcases Madeira's adventurous side. You'll experience the drama of Madeira's scenery from up close and get an insight into the island's culture, too. Ruben, one of our expert local guides, says, "Get ready to learn the secrets of mixing poncha, the much-loved island tipple made with sugar cane rum, fresh juice and local honey. Be careful, though – poncha's fruity, refreshing taste hides a serious kick."Starting off in Ponta do Sol, you'll get great views of the south coast from Paul da Serra, 1400m above sea level. Then it's on to Fanal, where some of the oldest Laurel trees on the island grow. Ruben says, "Madeira's laurel forests are the largest surviving area of primary laurisilva woods anywhere. Some of the trees are thought to be around 800 years old, and the ecosystem is largely intact. These forests host around 100 endemic species, and they are protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site."Rumble past typical ‘poios' terraced farmland en route to Seixal beach for a swim. After this, we'll head to Chão da Ribeira to savour a tasty local lunch. Chef Sérgio will show you how to make the classic grilled beef skewer, known in Portuguese as ‘espetada', while you enjoy a glass of Madeira Wine as an apéritif. There's also a vegan burger option. To wrap up your tour, we'll visit São Vicente to meet an organic honey producer. Here, you'll learn all about honey production, and you'll try your hand at making Madeira's traditional drink, poncha.

Madeira 4x4 tour with ecological park visit and local tastings

On this tour, you'll dive into Madeira's wild side, giving you a taste of the island's nature, traditions and local life all in one trip. First up is the Parque Ecológico do Funchal, where you'll explore the island's sustainability efforts. Depending on the month, you'll either plant a tree to help restore Madeira's ecosystem or check out the Interpretation Centre to see how this landscape has been protected over time. Riu, one of our local expert guides, says, “this is the kind of experience that lets you give something back to Madeira while discovering what makes the island so special.”After this, you'll head up to Santo da Serra for a 4x4 adventure that winds through hidden trails you'd never stumble across on your own. Then, things slow down with a walk along the Levada Serra do Faial, following Madeira's historic irrigation channels through dense greenery and streams. If the weather isn't playing ball, you might swap to the equally picturesque Paradise Valley Levada instead – either way, you'll get a feel for the island's deep connection to water and nature. To wrap it all up, you'll stop at a bar for a proper taste of local life. You'll be welcomed with a regionally-crafted sidra and carne vinha d'alhos – marinated pork with a garlicky sauce – followed by sopa de trigo, Madeira's oldest traditional soup, cooked over a wood fire and served with a glass of red wine. After some live folklore music, you'll make your way to Ribeira de Machico, a valley lined with terraced farms that show just how much care locals have poured into this land for generations.
