Setting off from Nabeul or Hammamet, day one begins by heading to El Djem to visit the remarkable Roman amphitheatre. It dates back to the 3rd century AD and is one of the largest and best-preserved colosseums in the world, showcasing prime Roman Empire opulence. Then, travel by 4x4 through lunar-like landscapes to the troglodyte village of Matmata and experience the Berber communities' way of life. After lunch, continue west to Douz for an overnight stay, enjoying a four-star hotel and dinner at the gateway to the Sahara.
You’ll be forgiven for waking up on day two and humming the Star Wars theme, as it’s a morning of visiting the classic franchise’s famous filming locations. First up is the salt desert of Chott El Jerid. it’s easy to see why this bright white, surreal landscape gave filmmakers an alien planet vibe. Continue to Ong Jmel, where rocky outcrops dominate the horizon, including the camel-shaped formation the area is named after. Your trip ends in Kairouan, an ancient Islamic city with one of the oldest mosques in the world and a UNESCO-listed medina. After the desert plains, soak up the riot of colours in the traditional souks, where handwoven carpets, painted ceramics and punchy spices are proudly displayed – perfect to grab a memento from your trip.
