Why you’ll love this…

You'll learn about the district's evolution, from medieval times through to modern-day liberal policies
There will be insights into how criminal syndicates and drug trafficking shaped the neighborhood
A visit to historic landmarks like the Oude Kerk, Chinatown, and Dam Square is included

What to expect

Discover the shadowy aspects of Amsterdam on this engaging walking tour, delving into the history of the globally renowned Red Light District. You'll traverse the streets around the district as an expert guide unravels how organised crime, smuggling, vice and coffee shop culture became entwined with Amsterdam's ascent as one of Europe's premier trading ports.

You'll unearth the truths behind Amsterdam's reputation for tolerance, from medieval times and the influx of countless sailors to the progression of liberal policies and the city's distinctive method of regulation. Understand how criminal syndicates, drug trafficking, and the heroin crisis of the 1970s and 1980s altered the neighbourhood before ambitious redevelopment reshaped it once more.

During your exploration, visit historic landmarks including the Oude Kerk, Chinatown, the East India House, and Dam Square. Hear the tales of brothel keepers, merchants, law enforcement officers, reformers, coffee shops, and those who resided and worked in Amsterdam’s most notorious district.
