What to expect

The city of Vukovar's had a tough time in recent years. During Croatia's War for Independence with Yugoslavia in the Nineties, the town was completely destroyed after an 87-day siege called the Battle of Vukovar. During this guided walking tour of the city, you'll see a few scars of the conflict up close. From the port in Vukovar's centre, you'll set off through the streets to your first stop – the destroyed water tower, which you'll see from a distance. This 50-metre-tall monument's riddled with bullet holes, and it paints a pretty clear picture of how intense the fighting was. Before heading back to the port, you'll stroll through the pedestrianised zone – the city's main shopping area. Here, you'll be able to get your hands on the city's most popular souvenir – a ceramic dove statue that's displayed as a symbol of peace in Vukovar.

The guide Romani was passionate about the history of Vukovar but was able to give what was a tragic past in a light hearted but knowledgeable way. The tour was not long as Vukovar is a small town, allowing some time for free time before heading back to the boat.

The local guide, Romana, was the star of this tour. As a local who had first hand knowledge of the siege of Vukovar, she explained the history and background to the recent war talking with passion and meaning but also managing to instil some humour in what was a dark period of their recent history. With her personal insights and the stories of locals she shared with us I will remember this tour for a long time.
