What to expect

Each one of the Dodecanese Islands offers a distinctly different experience – and Symi is one of the most culturally rich of them all. You'll discover its laidback charm and visit sites such as Panormitis Monastery and a sponge maker. Fotini, one of our local guides, says, ‘Symi is one of the smallest and most picturesque Greek islands. The sight of the colourful houses as soon as you enter the harbour never fails to impress.'

The fun starts with a glide across the Aegean to Symi. The first stop is in the southwest of the island, at the vast, Venetian-style Panormitis Monastery. It is famed for its Byzantine frescoes and icon of St Michael, but most of all for its location right on the water's edge in a remote and sheltered bay. You'll also have free time to explore the site.

Next, you'll sail for Symi town itself. The arrival into the harbour is a joy to behold – tiers of pastel-coloured houses cascade down the surrounding hillsides. There's a guided tour of Symi town, too. And during the sponge maker visit, you'll learn about the island's sponge-diving heritage and its importance to the eco system surrounding the Symi. Your visit also helps support this traditional industry, vital to the local community. You'll get a small gift to take home, too. It's Fotini's favourite part of the experience. She says, ‘The old tradition of sponge diving has strongly affected the history and the customs of the Dodecanese Islands.'

The boat was quite nice, however it seemed like it was overpacked with people. The journey took over 2 hours and was quite tiring by the end, very interesting learning about the sponges and the history behind it. Dissapointing part was learnt all about sponges only to receive a free soap? Would reccomend bringing own food as boat prices higher than in Simi. Loved the monistary, but very busy as people there all at once. Overall glad I went for the experience, but should of picked a quicker boat

Positives Symi is beautiful island, worth a visit. Pick up on time, drivers friendly and tour guide full of knowledge. Sponge shop really interesting. Negative Transport - pick up outside run down hotel, didn't feel safe. Ferry journey - everyone running for seats, chaotic. 2 hr each way. Yellow seats transferring paint to people's clothes. Tour of Symi town - would've been nicer to see more of the town Monestry - tiny had roughly 30 mins to explore.

I enjoyed every aspect of the tour. What i hated was the absolutely rip off prices the shops are charging tourist. In one shop I see the original price of the T shirts for €10. When I asked the price, since there was no price on display . The lady in the shop said €14. The other big rip off for me and a big no no wS the restaurant that was recommended. My bill was €53 for a chicken, jumbo shrimp,Greek salad, fanta and water. I know i was overcharged. They don't encourage me to buy nothing.

We had a great day visiting Symi although it would have been helpful if we knew that it would be an open ferry, as very cold on board. The guide was very knowledgeable and gave clear directions. The visit to Symi didn’t allow much time to look around, so it may be better to skip going to Panormitis monastery as it only took 15mins to visit and instead spend more time looking round at Symi . Over all good value and a great day out.

long boat journey with nothing much at the end. Although the church was different, again not worth such a long sea trip.
