Things to do in Pyramids of Giza & the Great Sphinx

4.4/5(714)

When you think of Egypt, what comes to mind first? It’s hard to imagine anything other than the astounding magnitude of the Pyramids of Giza and the monumental Great Sphinx of Giza. These archaeological wonders are found at the Giza pyramid complex, also known as the Giza Necropolis or the Giza Plateau, approximately 13 km southwest of Cairo. Listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979, the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx regularly draw in millions of curious tourists from around the world.

Egypt’s Pyramids of Giza are made up of 3 massive pyramids, the Pyramid of Menkaure, Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Khufu, the last also commonly being referred to simply as the Great Pyramid of Giza for its immense height. All were painstakingly built during the fourth dynasty of ancient Egypt for the ruling pharaohs at the time, hence their names. No one knows for sure exactly how they were built, but one thing’s for certain: the Pyramids of Giza continue to faithfully preserve the genuine essence of Egypt.

A veil of mystery also surrounds the towering Great Sphinx of Giza that stands guard over the tombs on the east side of the Giza pyramid complex. The world-famous limestone statue of a recumbent sphinx is one of the oldest, largest, and most recognisable sculptures in the world. Most believe the sculpture’s head is modelled after Egyptian pharaoh Khafre, although the nose was subsequently destroyed for unknown reasons. Nonetheless, the Great Sphinx remains a magnificent emblem of Egypt.

“The whole trip was incredible. I did have an error with my ticket with my name having been input wrong by the company but it was sorted thankfully and I finally made it to the pyramids. The guide Jimmy (Mohammed) was brilliant. He was kind, funny and extremely knowledgeable. A wonderful experience I would recommend to everyone.”

“We enjoyed every part of our experience, the itinerary was well thought out. We started with a boat trip down the Nile, a trip to the pyramids, Buffett lunch and finally the Grand Museum. The 2:15am pick up was a challenge however, we arrived back at the hotel at 20:30pm in time for dinner. Our guide was exceptional, very knowledgeable and friendly - a brilliant story teller! The trip is expensive and we were aware of the extra costs which I’m not sure that everyone in our group was! 5* Trip!”

“The whole day was very well organised from the start till the end. It's a very long day, we were picked up from our hotel at 4.10am then straight to the airport(which was an experience in itself but great overall) the flight to Cairo was only an hour, where Ahmed was waiting for us. He was brilliant very efficient and had a lot of knowledge. First the Pyramids and Sphinks around 3.5h. The the museum. Wow, just wow. Magnificent! Then flight back to Hirghada at21.30. I would absolutely recommend!”

“Positives: Entry to the Great Pyramid. Fantastic! GEM was amazing. Very knowledgeable guide Manal. Safe and comfortable transport throughout by coach. Felt very looked after. More time and explanation of the Sphinx would have been appreciated. Waited some time at the pyramid visitor centre for guide to purchase tickets and wait for additional people to join our party so minimum number was reached (so the coach could drive on to the plateau.)”
