What to expect

Villages, viewpoints and volcanic rocks dot Gran Canaria's jagged spine. This tour weaves its way through some of the island's most dramatic landscapes, stopping along the way to visit gems such as Teror, Tejeda and Fataga. David, one of our local guides, says, ‘The legend of the apparition of the Virgin Mary in Teror still intrigues me. It was in 1481, amid the Castilian conquest of Gran Canaria, and it helped change the island's destiny.'

After a visit to an aloe vera plantation to get the lowdown on its medicinal properties, you'll head into the Valley of a Thousand Palms for a wander around the cozy village of Fataga, all cobbled lanes, palm-fringed views and traditional Canarian architecture. There's a photo stop at Las Tirajanas viewpoint to admire a vast volcanic caldera, followed by a scenic mountain drive to Tejeda, which is a bit of a looker too – red-roofed, whitewashed houses sprinkled on the slope of a valley. David adds, ‘Every time there's a list of Spain's prettiest villages, Tejeda is near the top. Its setting is unbeatable.'

Next up is a local lunch in a family-owned restaurant, before you continue to Teror, the last stop on your adventure. Strolling past the balconied townhouses of Calle Real de la Plaza towards the mountain-framed basilica of Our Lady of the Pine is one of the defining Gran Canaria experiences.

We enjoyed the terrain and the views were spectacular. A lovely lunch mid way through was very enjoyable and enjoyed by all. Too much emphasis by Steve on ancient geographical & geographical events. Nothing about the local cuisine or the local produce or music culture.

I wouldn't recommend either this trip or the guide Astrid. Astrid spoke at length about money, safety and immigration. I learned very little about how Gran Canaria's volcanic history or the history of the Canaries generally. Very disappointed with this excursion.

The guide, Steve, was very knowledgeable and interesting to listen to. His English was good and he made some funny jokes.

This experience took place Althea while island was covered with a severe dust storm, visibility was limited to a few yards. The food served at lunch was abysmal. And a number of guests on the tour were display health issues due to the dust laden air. This tour should have been cancelled due to the storm.

Coach driver was very competent. Guide not as engaged as she could have been. Dropped off in villages & left to own devices no explanation of village, why it had been includec on tour etc. Lunch wasnt as expected, one waitress trying to do everything. A gluten free lady in group wasnt catered for. 2 in our party felt unwell during journey, it could have been explained this is possible/common. Been on lots of Tui tours before, this wad by far the worst. Very disappointing & expensive.

The guide Steve was very good and informative as well as being humorous. The lunch was generally disappointing. The soup was tasty but the main course was poor quality and under seasoned ( fish) . Sauce was gloopy. My husband's beef stew was gristle. The pudding was whipped fatty air - not at all pleasant. Prefer to pay a bit extra for something more tasty. More time at last stop would have been good also.
