  • Tucking into a typical Canarian lunch, made with locally sourced ingredients, is a highlight
  • The convenience of travelling in small, eight-seater minivans to access narrow roads and tracks
  • Your tour will be led by an expert local guide with unrivalled knowledge of Fuerteventura's landscapes
What to expect

The centre of Fuerteventura is all about local villages, barren mountains and the feeling that you have just stepped back in time. On this exclusive tour, you'll venture into the heart of the island, taking in epic views, vegetation, valleys, caves and striking eroded coastline. Maribel, one of our expert local guides, says, "This is a unique itinerary with a great combination of must-see highlights on a route that is off the traditional tourist track. My favourite aspect of this tour are the walks – none are long, but they are very varied and give you a great insight into the character of the island."

Travelling in eight-seater minivans, we'll be able to access narrow roads and country tracks that big coaches can't. Your guide will fill you in on everything there is to know about Fuerteventura as you contemplate its eroded mountains, hidden valleys and remote villages. Maribel adds, "At each of the five stops, we'll get out into the landscape to experience it properly, with a walk of approximately 30-45 minutes to see viewpoints, caves, volcanoes and coastline."

So hop onboard to see some real hidden gems. The La Laguna volcano in Tiscaminita, Las Peñitas dam near Vega de Rio Palmas, the west coast fishing village of Ajuy to visit its volcanic caves, and a stop in La Pared if you are staying in the south, or Los Molinos for those staying in the north, to catch sight of the amazing coves and crevices of the west. What's more, there's lunch in a traditional Canarian restaurant along the way.

Ajuy and Las Peñitas Walking Tour with Picnic

Everything that makes the western highlands of Fuerteventura special comes together on this walking tour. Your guide will lead you through one of the island's greenest areas and barren landscapes with a Wild West feel, all the way to the fishing village of Ajuy – and there's a few hidden surprises on this well-known route. Fernando, one of our insider guides, says ‘Every year, on the third Saturday of September, thousands of islanders dressed in traditional Canarian costume pilgrimage through the gorge to worship Fuerteventura's patron saint.'Discover off the beaten track parts of Fuerteventura as you embark on foot, crisscrossing valleys from the hamlet of Vega de Rio Palmas to the hermitage of Las Peñitas. There'll be plenty of photo stops and the chance to rest in the shade under one of the many date trees which dot the route. Thanks to the surrounding sea of green vegetation and otherworldly rock formations, locals refer to the area as the ‘Oasis of Fuerteventura'. Film fans, though, can spot it in one of the scenes from the Marvel movie, The Eternals.Continue the trail along a gorge towards the coast and we'll reach the wave washed Ajuy. This remote village is famed for its sea caves, which you'll get time to explore along with its black volcanic beaches. Stroll along the shore at El Jurado and treat your feet to a dip in the refreshing water of the Atlantic. We'll tuck into a well-deserved picnic before heading back.

Then, with a bit of luck, you'll be treated to an incredible show as they leap, plunge and race through the water alongside you.You may even spot baby dolphins swimming close to their mothers, and if you're really lucky, pilot whales too.
