On Sal’s east coast, Kite Beach is where the island’s steady trade winds turn the Atlantic into a playground for kitesurfers. Just south of Santa Maria, this long stretch of golden sand is one of Cape Verde’s best-known spots for wind and water sports, with colourful kites often filling the horizon. Even if you’re not here to ride the waves, the beach makes a lively stop for watching the action and taking in Sal’s wild Atlantic coastline.

You can try kitesurfing with a local instructor, watch experienced riders carve across the water or simply walk along the wide sandy shore. The conditions are particularly popular from November to June, when the trade winds are at their strongest. Kite Beach hosts international kitesurfing competitions, helping put Sal firmly on the global map for the sport.
